TL; DR

  • The Amazon Appstore is broken on Android 12 devices.
  • Users will not be able to launch apps downloaded from the Amazon store.

The Google Play Store is a very popular choice for downloading Android apps, but the Amazon Appstore is one of the most popular alternatives out there. In fact, this is the Android app market I chose for Windows 11.

Unfortunately, the Amazon Appstore on Android 12 seems to have broken down a month after the update was released to device manufacturers. Specifically, users on the Amazon Support Forum (h / t: Slashdot and Liliputing) While not all of the apps downloaded from the Amazon store, most complain that it doesn’t work on Android 12 devices.

The problem is with Amazon’s DRM and applies to both free and paid apps. Some users also say that their app library is not visible in the Amazon AppStore.

The first complaints appeared more than a month ago, and comments are still coming in today. So Amazon seems to be dragging its feet in this situation. This isn’t a good look at all, as beta versions of Android 12 could have been tested for months.

However, the company has since started sending messages in the app to affected users:

We are also happy with Android 12. Unfortunately, we are solving some problems. Thank you for your patience in bringing us back to the Appstore

Haven’t updated to Android 12 yet? If you’re an Amazon Appstore user, we’ll be wary of doing that for now. There is no way to know how long it will take to solve a problem.
