Queen congratulates Barbados on becoming a republic | Barbados

As Barbados removes the Queen as head of state and becomes a republic, the king sends him congratulations on a “significant” day for the nation.

Prince Charles arrived in the Caribbean island on Sunday to join in the inauguration of the newly elected president, Sandra Mason, who replaces the Queen as head of state in just one night as Barbados unleashes a remnant of a 400-year colonial system.

In a message to Mason, the Queen wishes all Barbadians a happy, peaceful and prosperous future.

He said: “On this important occasion and your inauguration as the first president of Barbados, I congratulate you and all the people of Barbados.

“I first visited your beautiful country the night before independence in early 1966, and I am thrilled to have my son with you today. Since then, the people of Barbados have held a special place in my heart; is a country that is proud of its vibrant culture, athletic talent, and natural beauty, which attracts visitors from all over the world, including many people from the United Kingdom. ”

He continued: “Over the years, our countries enjoy co-operation based on common values, shared success, and close cooperation on many issues, including the recent climate change work. It is also a source of great satisfaction that Barbados is always participating in the Commonwealth, and I look forward to continuing the relations between our two countries and our nations.

“As you celebrate this special day, I send you and all the people of Barbadians my best wishes for happiness, peace and prosperity in the future. Elizabeth R. ”

Charles went to the island on Sunday to confirm the “thousands” communication between the people of the two countries. He gave the address as Barbados embarked on a new chapter in its history on November 30, marking the 55th anniversary of its independence from Britain. The festivities began at 8pm local time, midnight UK time.

The last time the Queen was deposed was head of state in 1992, when Mauritius declared itself a republic. The Barbados decision will be closely watched by other members of the Commonwealth, especially in the Caribbean.
